#5 Quick reflective notes after 4/16 transcripts have been coded

Even though there are large parts of the transcripts where participants are not directly talking about their view on workplace clinical training (WCT) preparedness, i.e. they don’t start their sentence with “I think it’s really important that students…”, there is so much data to be taken from these parts of the discussions. Even where participants talk about what happens during WCT is useful to surmise how we might prepare students for it. Additionally, in some places participants talk about how they prepare their students for WCT which can also provide further insights.

The main thing that is standing out to me is that having a growth mindset, understanding that failure and mistakes are inevitable, responding constructively to feedback and reflection are all interlinked and very important for participants so far.

Although the relative importance of codes (characteristics) is not necessarily reflected in the number of times references are coded to it, it is interesting to see that the most coded preparedness characteristics are currently:

⁃ Awareness that imperfection, mistakes and failure are inevitable and okay (n=19)

⁃ Reflection (n=18)

⁃ Resilience (n=16)

⁃ Receptivity to feedback including negative feedback (n=13)

⁃ A growth mindset and willingness to learn (n=11)

⁃ Internally motivated - learning for vet life, vs exams (n=10)

Below is a copy of the coding framework as it currently stands, you can see that it's expanded a little since I finished coding the first transcript, but not by a lot. Hopefully it will plateau soon - then I can be confident that I have reached saturation with my group interviews. I am holding one (hopefully, final) interview on Tuesday so I need to reflect before then on if there's anything specific that I want to ask participants about in light of the coding performed so far.
